Hockey Tryout Preparation Program
Evaluation-Type Drills
These drills mimic the skills and scenarios that scouts and coaches typically evaluate during tryouts.
Skating Evaluation Drills
These drills focus on skating fundamentals that coaches evaluate for speed, agility, and control.
🏃♂️ Forward Stride and Backward Skating
- Focus on quick starts, tight turns, and explosive crossovers to show speed, edge control, and agility. These skills are essential for breaking away from defenders and making smooth transitions on the ice.
⛸️ Edgework
- Practice inside and outside edges, including quick pivots and transitions. This shows precision in your skating and helps you demonstrate control in tight situations.
💨 Agility Ladders/Cones
- Set up tight turns or weaving patterns with ladders or cones to showcase your lateral speed and control under pressure. This demonstrates your ability to maneuver quickly while under pressure.
Puck Skills Evaluation
These drills focus on puck handling, passing, and shooting—skills that are key during tryouts.
🌀 Stickhandling under Pressure
- Perform stickhandling drills in tight spaces or while being defended to show control and creativity with the puck. This helps demonstrate your ability to maintain possession and make plays under pressure.
🎯 Passing Accuracy
- Work on crisp, accurate passes with both forehand and backhand. Practice targeting moving or stationarytargets under pressure, showing your ability to distribute the puck efficiently.
⚡ Shooting on the Move
- Practice wrist shots, snap shots, and one-timers while in motion. Make sure to focus on a quick release under pressure, simulating real game conditions where you need to score or create opportunities.
🔥 Breakaways and Deft Moves
- Simulate 1v1 scenarios where you must use quick dekes or moves to beat a goalie or defender. This showcases your creativity, ability to handle pressure, and decision-making in critical situations.
By focusing on these evaluation-type drills, you’ll be ready to showcase your skills and stand out during tryouts. 💪✨ Would you like tips on how to structure your practice sessions or any advice for nerves before tryouts?
